Flood Risk in KatandraWest

Katandra West Township does not have any water ways that run through it, though Congupna Creek and Guilfus Creek may threaten surrounding farm land 2km West of the Township. History shows that Riverine Floods do not impact the Township of Katandra  West.

The Congupna Creek and Guilfus Creek are prone to flood if there has been heavy rail falls on the Dookie Hills effecting the same area 2km West of the Township.

Katandra West is susceptible to flash flooding caused by significant Rain fall in a short space of time causing road closures and isolation. Rain over 75mm over 24 hours is likely to overwhelm the drainage network causing Flash Flooding.

No houses in the township are known to flood in past events however 2 houses off Labuan Road have flooded in the past.

It can take from weeks to months for all flood water to dissipate around Katandra West and several days to disperse off local roads.

Roads Subject to Flooding

The following roads are known to be effected by Flash Flooding

During a flood more than the listed roads may be inundated, this is to be used only as a guide.


5.51 Meters at the Benalla Gauge the following will most likely happen

All Roads are subject to inundations during a flash flood event, do not drive though flood water, car's can float in as little as 15cm of water and damage to the road may not be visible along with manhole and drain covers being dislodged.

Flood gauges

Riverine Flooding has not been known to impact the township of Katandra  West in the past. It has impacted rural land West of Katandra  West.

The two Gauges relevant to Katandra West are;

The following river heights at the Broken River Gauge in Benalla have caused flooding in the rural area West of Katandra West 

Sandbagging locations

If deemed necessary by Incident Control Centre (not Shepparton Search & Rescue), a sandbagging location will be setup. The most likely location is the Katandra recreation reserve car park in front of the Recreation Reserve Pavilion.
